How
would you describe your ministry?
This ministry is devoted to communicating, experiencing, and receiving
the Gospel through the arts. Being that we are created in His image
and He is the grand artist, I believe it is a God-given, innate
thread in all of us to receive through art. Also, I believe that
Grace is a unique haven for artists. I have the honor of working
with artists to support the message every week. The arts ministry
is also responsible for events at Grace. This kind of outreach gives
us the opportunity to reach people that would ordinarily never go
into a church.
What inspired you to take on this responsibility?
When I found Grace, it was like God hit me over the head and said,
“Look, Dusty, I even made it look like a theatre; will you
please come here?” It was brought to my attention that there
could actually be a marriage between faith and art, and a happy
one. How could I not be inspired? I find that the truth of art is
the Gospel, and to have the privilege to experience that with other
artists is the coolest thing in the world.
How long have you been at it?
I have been working at Grace since November 2003.
What is there about it that gets your motor running?
I am an external processor and an artist, so I absolutely love to
work in collaboration. While creating a drama for Sunday morning,
I not only have the honor of experiencing community, but I also
get to really chew on the message with others. A script for Sunday
morning has to be dead on, which means we really have to break it
down. I eat that stuff up when I get to do it with other people.
What’s the best advice you’ve
ever been given?
My dad has always told me to “use your head.” It is
amazing how many situations that simple advice works for. He was
always encouraging me to think things through and not settle for
the easy answer. He taught me to question, analyze, and consider.
What cartoon character do you most identify
with?
Tigger.
What are you reading?
Anne Lamott’s “Traveling Mercies.” Wow what a
book! I am also into “The Magician’s Nephew” (yes,
a little late, but I wouldn’t have it any other way) and multiple
scripts in search of the next possible production at Grace.
What’s currently in your CD player?
Norah Jones, Pat Benatar, “Footloose” Soundtrack, Jewel,
Bon Jovi, U2, Train, Jars of Clay, Tom Money, Sarah McLachlan, Slayer,
Journey, Bob Dylan, and Evanescence.
.
What do you do to unwind and de-stress?
Conversations with someone close to me, going for a hike, petting
my kitties, and working on art projects.
How did you find your way to Grace Church?
I was burnt out on church, and I was church shopping when a friend
of mine informed me that Grace was large enough that I could hide
there--you know, get lost in the crowd. By my third visit, I was
filling out a connect card and checking off the drama box.
