An Artist in the Middle
Artist Anne Bevan, whose art is currently featured in the Grace Centre Gallery, will be in the foyer between the services this Sunday, June 25, to discuss her work.
Bevan, an artist who resides in western North Carolina, recently displayed her landscapes at the Gallery Minerva on Church Street in downtown Asheville. Her work has also been seen at the New Jersey State Museum and the International Exchange in the Soviet Union and many other galleries.
Before moving to the area, Anne had never been a landscape painter before. “As much as I admired the genre, I had always felt a vague dissatisfaction. I was always conscious of being ‘over here,’ and the image being ‘over there.’”
Her view changed, however, when she remembered a phrase she once heard: “The divine messiness of nature.” Instead of standing in between she now viewed her role as an artist as one of immersion.
“When I cease any attempt to impose my expectations, my idea of what earth and earthly experience should be, when I virtually disappear into nature, however it presents itself, I see a vision of truth more beautiful than any I could imagine.”
